Pre-Season Start….Agger,Cavalieri,Degen, and the youngsters
Agger
The Danish centre back played 75 minutes of a low-key encounter at Prenton Park that saw the visitors win 1-0 and the Reds boss admitted he was pleased to see the defender come through it unscathed.
“I think Agger did okay,” he said. “The main thing for us was to see if he could come through and he had no problems so he will be a good plus for the team.
Agger suffered a metatarsal injury in September 2007, with his comeback delayed by a series of setbacks during a 10-month recovery that required three operations on his right foot.
“The main thing for us was to see if he could come through and he had no problems,” said Benitez after the game.
“He will be a welcome addition to our defence in the coming season.”
Debutants Degen And Cavalieri
Benitez also had words of encouragement for newboys Philipp Degen and Diego Cavalieri who both showed glimpes of their quality as second half substitutes.
“Cavalieri didn’t have too much to do but we know he will be a keeper who will fight for his place with Pepe (Reina),” said Benitez.
“We also saw what Degen can offer on the right side. It is a game that we can take positives from and a lot of the lads tried to impress.
“I think Degen had four or five good openings in attack and he put in a few crosses and I think we saw the potential that he has.”
Young Stars In The Making
Rafa Benitez had an emphasis firmly on youth for the game, with Spanish teenager Danny Pacheco, the former Barcelona junior, playing up front, and youngsters Stephen Darby, Jack Hobbs, Damien Plessis, goalkeeper David Martin and Emiliano Insua also making appearances.
The first-half display of 17-year-old Daniel Pacheco caught eyes everywhere, as the young Spaniard’s inventive performance gave his manager food for thought ahead of the club’s pre-season trip to Switzerland.
“Today I think Pacheco was really good and he had two or three chances and was a threat in attack.” said Benitez
“We saw how good he was for the reserves last season and today everyone could see he has the talent and the quality.”
The Goal Scorer (Yossi Benayoun)
Benayoun scored the only goal of the game with an impressive 30 yard drive just before half time.
