Mascherano’ll miss season start
Liverpool’s pre-season preparations have been dealt a blow with the news that Javier Mascherano will miss the start of the season after being called into the Argentina squad for the Olympic Games.
The Olympic football tournament runs from August 6 until August 23, and with reigning champions Argentina taking a strong squad to Beijing, a run to the final could rule Mascherano out of domestic action for Liverpool’s first three games of the season.
Liverpool begin their campaign with a trip to Sunderland on August 16 before hosting Middlesbrough on August 23.
Rafa Benitez’s side are scheduled to travel to Aston Villa on August 30, but if Argentina have reached the final Mascherano could be allowed extra time to recover, and might not make his Premier League bow until the crunch clash with Manchester United at Anfield on September 13.
