Riise Gone To Roma
Norway full-back John Arne Riise has disclosed that he moved to Roma from Liverpool for a “new experience” and also revealed that he is looking forward to playing alongside ‘idol’ Francesco Totti.
The 27-year-old left-back/left-winger joined the Serie A outfit in a reported £4m deal after spending seven years at Anfield.
With Roma having finished runners-up to Inter last season in the Italian league, Riise is keen that Luciano Spalletti’s side finish top of the tree in the next season.
“We start from second place, and in sport you always work for improvement,” Riisie told Tuttosport. “We must make another step forward.
“For sure the city is beautiful, it is hot and the climate is lovely. Indeed at 9am you are already gasping for air.
“I came here to work hard. Roma are a great club. I needed a new experience, to learn another language, and a new culture. I wanted to make a life-change and for this my thanks go to my friends at Liverpool, to my agent, and to Luciano Spalletti.
“I am curious to get to know Totti, a great, an idol and I believe that with him it will be fun.”
Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has praised the contribution of John Arne Riise after he joined AS Roma.
The Norwegian international has signed a four-year contract with the Italian club, ending a seven-year stay at Anfield.
Although Riise never won a Premier League title, he helped the club to success in the Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup.
“John Arne has been a great player for Liverpool for six or seven seasons now,” Carragher told the club’s official website.
“He has played nearly 350 games and scored a lot of goals. He won the Champions League with us and he’s still at a good age, I think 27 or 28 now.
“He’s played at a very high level for a long time now. He’s never injured and he’s a great professional who has always looked after himself. He can be very proud of what he’s achieved with Liverpool.”
John Carew is tipping John Arne Riise to be huge hit in Serie A after the full-back completed his move from Liverpool to Italian side AS Roma
The Aston Villa striker – who enjoyed a season on loan with i Lupi in 2004 – believes his Norwegian international teammate has all the attributes to prosper in the Italian capital and has wished him all the best in his new challenge.
“In my opinion, I think he will be a success at Roma,” said Carew
“He is the type of defender who fits in very well to Italian football. He is good both defensive and going forward, has a good left foot and a long throw-in.”
